The Position of the Boss

Rivalries over the position of president or prime minister and fighting over becoming the boss of crime gangs occur all the time.
History tells us that the collapse of the Roman Empire occurred not due to external attacks but rather through internal conflicts.
The more intelligent species of animals, like chimpanzees and monkeys, also compete over leadership positions.
As soon as a leader becomes weak, the No. 2 will start to attack the leader wishing to make himself boss.
The same behavior is seen with human beings. When a boss becomes ill, grows senile or becomes soft-hearted and is said to be like a saint, the contenders will stir around him, hoping to seize his job.
In the case of a household, too, when the head of household is working hard and earning money, his wife and children obey him respectfully. However, as soon as he becomes unemployed due to personnel cutbacks or retirement, his wife and other family members begin attacking him aggressively.
It is quite often seen that a wife, though she was kind before, suddenly becomes bossy and unkind to the husband, as if revealing her true character, by turning the children against him.
Shocked by this sudden change, husbands begin suffering from intense chronic stress, depression and all sorts of diseases. A great number of men die within one year of their retirement. This may prove the old saying that "for men, humiliation is harder to bear than death."
It is a reality in the present human society that the most influential people are those who earn the most money. Unless a person continues endlessly to work hard and earn money, it will be very hard for him to maintain a position as the boss. In the case of a family, too, when a wife earns more than her husband, she naturally assumes the role of the boss.
This continuing to be the case, the behavior of human beings is no different from that of animals. I believe that we must become aware of our cultural backwardness by understanding how human beings ought to live.

Everyone desires to do things in their own preferred way and, by the same token, nobody desires to be ruled over by others.
Yet, desires alone do not qualify a person for the position of boss.
The true qualification to become the boss is, I believe, to possess astuteness, kindness and strength, or, in the old Chinese terminology, wisdom, benevolence and valor.
